| Style | Oats : liquid | 1 cup of oats needs |
|---|---|---|
| Stovetop / Microwave (rolled oats) | 1 : 2 | 2 cups |
| Steel Cut | 1 : 3 | 3 cups |
| Overnight Oats | 1 : 1 | 1 cup |
| Oat Milk | 1 : 4 | 4 cups |
Oatmeal to water ratio in grams
Switch the unit to Grams to work by weight, which is the most repeatable way to measure. The calculator uses 90 g per cup for rolled oats and 160 g per cup for steel cut oats, and 240 ml per cup of liquid, then gives the answer in millilitres. For example, 50 g of rolled oats on the stovetop needs about 267 ml. Your cups and grams entries are kept separately, so flipping between them never loses what you typed.
How to make oatmeal thicker or thinner
Drag the Consistency slider. Standard is the base ratio. Thick uses 0.85 times the liquid, so 1 cup of rolled oats takes 1¾ cups of water instead of 2. Thin uses 1.15 times, which comes to 2¼ cups. Cup results are rounded to the nearest eighth of a cup and shown as a fraction you can find on a measuring set.
Overnight oats and oat milk ratios
Overnight oats soak at 1 part oats to 1 part milk or other liquid, so 1 cup of oats goes with 1 cup of milk. Homemade oat milk is 1 part oats to 4 parts water, blended and strained. Choose Overnight Oats or Oat Milk and enter the oats you have. The calculator does not cover pressure cookers, rice cookers or slow cookers, which cook differently from the stovetop.
