Morse Code Translator
This free Morse code translator works both ways with one box. Type plain text and you get Morse code; paste Morse and you get text. It detects which one you entered, tidies messy pasted dots and dashes, and can play the Morse as audio at the speed and pitch you choose. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is nothing to sign up for.
How to translate text to Morse code
- Type or paste your text into the top box. The Morse code appears in the box below as you type.
- Read the result - each letter is a group of dots and dashes, letters are separated by a space and words by a slash ( / ).
- Press Copy above the result to take the Morse with you.
HELLO WORLD → .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..
Accented letters are read as their plain letter (é becomes E), and characters Morse has no code for are skipped. Line breaks are kept, so each line is translated on its own.
How to translate Morse code to text
Paste your dots and dashes into the top box and the decoded text appears below. Separate letters with a space and words with a slash, two or more spaces, or a pipe ( | ).
Copied Morse is often messy, so it is cleaned up before it is decoded. Look-alike dot
characters such as ·, ▪ and * become a plain dot, and
look-alike dash characters such as —, – and _ become a
plain dash. Uneven spacing is fixed too, and nothing is rejected with an error. The result is
shown in capital letters, because Morse code has no upper or lower case.
Play Morse code as audio: speed and pitch
When the result is Morse code, a Play Audio button sits above it. Press it to hear the message as beeps, and press it again to stop. Tap the gear beside it to open the sliders:
- Speed (WPM) - from 5 to 40 words per minute, 20 by default. Slow it down to learn the sound of each letter.
- Pitch (Hz) - from 400 to 1000, 600 by default. Pick the tone that is easiest on your ears.
The timing follows the standard: a dot is one unit, a dash is three, the gap between letters is three and the gap between words is seven, where one unit lasts 1200 divided by the speed in milliseconds. The tone is generated in your browser, so there are no audio files to load.

What this translator does not do
It translates typed or pasted Morse only. It does not read Morse from an image, a video or an audio file, and it does not decode a flashing light. Characters with no Morse code are skipped, and the input is limited to 10,000 characters.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you translate to Morse code?
Type or paste your text into the top box and the Morse code appears in the box below as you type. Each letter becomes a group of dots and dashes, letters are separated by a single space and words by a slash. Use Copy to take the result with you.
How do you translate Morse code into English?
Paste your dots and dashes into the top box. The tool sees that the input is Morse and shows the decoded text in the box below, in capital letters because Morse has no upper or lower case. Separate letters with a space and words with a slash, two spaces or a pipe.
Can you translate Morse code?
Yes, in both directions, and you never have to choose one. The tool looks at what you entered and translates it the other way: text becomes Morse, and Morse becomes text. Messy Morse is cleaned up first, so odd dot and dash characters or uneven spacing do not cause an error.
What is the Morse code for SOS?
SOS is three dots, three dashes, three dots: ... --- ... When it is sent as one signal the letters run together with only the short letter gap between them. Type SOS in the top box to see it and press Play Audio to hear it.
Is there a Morse code translator with sound?
Yes. When the result is Morse code, a Play Audio button appears above it. The gear beside it opens two sliders, Speed (WPM) from 5 to 40 and Pitch (Hz) from 400 to 1000, so you can slow the tone down to learn or speed it up for practice. The sound is made in your browser, with no audio files.
Can I copy and paste Morse code?
Yes. Paste Morse into the top box, or press Copy above the result to copy the output. Pasted Morse that uses look-alike characters such as a middle dot, a square bullet, an em dash or an underscore is converted to plain dots and dashes automatically.
How do I write numbers in Morse code?
Every digit is a group of five dots and dashes. 1 is .---- and the code shifts one dash to a dot at each step up to 5 (.....), then flips for 6 to 9 and ends with 0 as -----. Type digits into the top box to translate them, or use the table above.
Does this translator decode Morse from a picture, video or flashing light?
No. It translates typed or pasted Morse only, and it plays Morse out as sound. It does not read Morse from an image, a video or an audio file, and it does not decode a flashing light. If you can read the dots and dashes yourself, type or paste them in and it will decode them.
